I am a Hanseatic historian and have been head of the Research Centre for the Hanse and Baltic History at the European Hansemuseum in Lübeck since 2017. I studied in Erlangen and went to Copenhagen to do my doctoral thesis. After postdoctoral studies there and in London, I finally came to Lübeck.

Even during my studies, I was fascinated by the Hanse – a unique phenomenon of voluntary cooperation that shaped large parts of Northern Europe for centuries. I find the question of how this widely ramified network remained functional through common rules, day trips and negotiations particularly exciting.

In addition to the history of the Hanseatic assembly system, I am intensively involved with the textile industry of the late Middle Ages and with questions of urban and economic history. In recent years, I have also developed a strong interest in digital methods, particularly in the field of handwriting recognition and digital text analysis. These approaches open up new access to sources and new perspectives for research.

I have been a member of the Hansischer Geschichtsverein (Hanseatic History Association) since 2005, where I have been an editorial member of the Hansische Geschichtsblätter (Hanseatic History Journal) since 2017 and a board member since 2020. I am also involved in the Network for Art and Culture of the Hanseatic Cities, the board of the Society for Schleswig-Holstein History, and other professional associations.
