I am an historian of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. I studied in Utrecht and defended my doctoral thesis at the University of Hamburg in 2019. After multiple research projects at the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven and the Georg August University of Göttingen, I am working as a research associate at the FGHO since June 2024.
A recurring theme in my scholarly work is people on the move in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period, be it pilgrims to Jerusalem (Master thesis), Seafarers to Iceland, the Faroes and Shetland (doctoral thesis and Postdoc), or generally the spatial aspects of mobility (Viabundus project). Growing up on the Lower Rhine and IJssel rivers in the East of the Netherlands, a region with historically strong ties to the Hanse, Hanseatic history has always fascinated me. Moreover, I am interested in applying digital methods in historical research.
At the FGHO, I cooperate in various long-term research projects, such as the Hanseatic Resolutions and Viabundus. In these projects I am among others responsible for database curation and research data management. Moreover, I cooperate closely with the team Research and Exhibition of the European Hansemuseum to (re)develop exhibitions.
