  • 1971–1977: Studies at the University of Heidelberg in history and German philology; furthermore political science (without a degree) and pre-history 
  • 1978–1984: Employee at the department for pre and early history as part of the interdisciplinary research project on ‘memorials at the Hansestadt Lübeck’ (sponsored by the Volkswagen foundation) engaging archeologists, historians and building historians
  • 1983: Submission of PhD thesis ‘Hauseigentum im spätmittelalterlichen Lübeck’ at the University of Heidelberg
  • 1985–1993: Employee at the department for the Preservation of Historical Monuments in Lübeck
  • 1993–2016: Director of the Research Centre for Hanse and Baltic History (FGHO, founded in 1993)
  • 1994–2016: Lecturer for Medieval and Early Modern history at the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel (in 2008 he became an honorary professor)
  • 1995–2016/17: Main editor of the Hansische Geschichtsblätter (journal of the Hanseatic History Society)
  • 2000–2016: Conceptual design of the European Hansemuseum in Lübeck; scientific director of the museum until his retirement in 2016.
  • 2002–2015: deputy director at the City Archives of Lübeck

Publications

Prof. Dr. Rolf Hammel-Kiesow’s main areas of research were the history of the Hanseatic League, medieval urban history with a particular focus on urban development, and the economic history of the Middle Ages and early modern period, especially trade. His work is characterised by close collaboration with archaeology, architectural history and economics.

His list of publications includes around 150 publications on the above-mentioned topics, including the publication of the multi-volume series ‘Häuser und Höfe in Lübeck. Historische, archäologische und baugeschichtliche Beiträge zur Geschichte der Hansestadt im Spätmittelalter und der frühen Neuzeit’ (‘Houses and Courtyards in Lübeck. Historical, Archaeological and Architectural Contributions to the History of the Hanseatic City in the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period’), of which six volumes were published between 1988 and 2006.
